Quartararo and Morbidelli head for Land of the Rising Sun and Japanese GP

The PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team duo of Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli are heading to the Land of the Rising Sun for the next round of the 2019 MotoGP championship, jetting off to Asia for the first of three back-to-back races that will culminate in the team’s home race in Malaysia. Going into the Grand Prix of Japan at the Twin Ring Motegi buoyant after strong results last time out in Thailand, the pair are aiming to continue their strong run of form when the lights go out on Sunday.

Quartararo led for most of the race last time out in Buriram, only losing out on the win in the last corner, but was still able to secure second place to move one step closer to the rookie of the year title (an award that he can mathematically win this weekend in Japan) and extending his lead in the Independent Riders’ championship. A big fan of the Motegi circuit, he came home in first place in last year’s Moto2 race there before losing the victory thanks to a technical infringement and will be no doubt keen to put that behind him with a strong result on Sunday.

Morbidelli is also heading to a circuit he has fond memories of and will be aiming to improve on a strong run of top-six finishes in recent races. Already a podium finisher at Motegi in the Moto2 class and looking to continue his recent impressive results, another strong result from him will also help lock down the squad’s lead in the Independent Teams championship as well.

The 2019 MotoGP World Championship kicks off at the Grand Prix of Japan on Friday 18th October with practice starting at 1050 local time (0950 Malaysian time) ahead of Sunday’s 24-lap race.
